Colca Canyon

2nd deepest canyon in the world. Or once again, so they say.

Sure is green!

We leave Puno early in the morning to make our way near Arequipa. I figure we will just hit up the grocery store in Juliaca, but the town was having a „protest” as we pulled up, kinda had to maneuver around the town to avoid all the “protesting.” Town was insane. After some struggles with the side roads, we finally make it around and start heading out again, everything back to normal.

Some more winding mountainous volcanic roads takes us past lakes and lookouts above 4400 meters.

Bought my poncho here. Quite nice.
It immediately transferred from brown to green.

There were a lot of big mountains and volcanos lingering around. Had to drive through a cloud at 4800 that I couldn’t see more than a few meters, but inching along we made it out to a massive winding road going to the start of the canyon.

We are really high up, and there are three mountains in the background. Can you see it? A massive wall that goes us and hides in the clouds? Very monstrous and impressive. The wall to Arequipa.
We took a turn and went up other volcanos, all the water up here was steaming.
Cloudy volcano land.
Top of the never ending winding road that goes down to the top and start of the canyon.
Canyon starts here. Not so deep yet, but quite green.
The road was luckily brand new but still had drops going straight down. Thought I’d take this pic for Uwe.
Long way to the top of you wanna rock and roll. Can’t even see the bottom here.
We did a hike, only half way down and back again. Difficult once again from the altitude, but sure was pretty.
Canyonerooooo!

After the canyon went to mirador los condors. Got lucky, second we got there, two flew right over head.

Believe it or not, that’s a condor. Let’s see you take a better picture with your phone. looked better with my own eyes anyways.
Few more miradors.

All in all, was really pretty and green there. On the way out there was a brand new winding long tunnel with no lights, pretty scary actually and difficult to maneuver. Took a picture, can’t see a thing so let it be.

Also want to mention that all Baños in Peru are S.S. and H.H. German specialities.

Very special shower inside.

On our way out, hit up a thermal bath, was nice, they had specific tubs for foreigners, really really cooking hot. Red skin again, but this time from over temp. Sorry Uwe, no cameras at a public pool. Although the group of 20 frenchies had no problems taking their phones in the pool for selfies.

More insane curvy mountain slick roads on the way out and some serious off roading, but nothing more intense than Argentinian national parks.

Some town had this in their center. Can you name the three animals?

Then got some amazing donuts filled with dolce de leche from some street umbrella at a Peruvian highway intersection. She could only speak her native tongue, no Spanish, but we got our donuts.

Up next! Sucre, Machu Picchu, ATVs, sacred valley, Inca jungle tour and more. But wait! 15 days of lockdown first?
