There’s a lot of Vag in Sweden, but it’s all been travelled. Our next goal is to cross into Lappland, the northern most territory in Sweden, via the Vildmårksvägen!

Our first stop on the way out of Östersund is of course, a place for breakfast. Should I get the eggs Benedict for some protein and complex carbs? Nope, more simple sugars and kanalbullar for me!

Then one more thing before we leave town, it’s been a while since our last shower, so a great idea of hitting up a Swedish sauna area. That was quite nice. We have a lot of sauna experience, but they had one which was death. I think it was the Stugbastu. 75 deg C with complete humidity. Brutal. But great! Now we are fresh and clean!
The Vildmarksvägen begins for us in Strömsund, but our first stop was a lovely random place for lunch.

Next stop, Alanäs. Where the neutral Swedes made military fortifications really far north in their country for the possible German invasion.

Lots of bunkers and pill boxes and other things we didn’t understand. But whatever troops were stationed there had a lovely view when it wasn’t all under snow or being invaded by the mosquitos.

Our next stop were two small towns, trying to find a listed boat rental, then giving up and going to a lovely cafe, but they only took swish and cash. We did the entire vacation with no cash. Sweden is great with this, even in the middle of nowhere, except for this one cafe, which was somebody’s garage.
Up next, the Hällingsåfallet.

And then we were off to Gäddede, a funny name to say, to camp for the night. Instead of using a recommendation, we explored on our own and lucky us!

Next morning, a cultural stop. I think it was a Norwegian or Icelandic village? I was confused by the happy Jason Vorhees.

Off to a town that unfortunately is not named Viking but very funny in German, Viken. To the Frostviken’s oldest church.

Back on the main road for some more waterfall action. This next one was great cause so many people stopped at the side of the road and thought that was it, but just a tiny 300m hike brought you to the real McCoy.

Next is Stora Blåsjön, a town with boat rentals, but ‘‘twas getting mighty fresh, so we stopped for a coffee and Kanelbullar. Was delicious as always.

Travelled off the main road to either Ankarede or Ankarvattnet, both small Sami church towns. (the original locals of the north of Norway Sweden and Finland are the Sami) Nothing spectacular but a LOT of hiking trails go through here, either Winter or Summer you can do some mega hikes. Would be quite nice.
We skipped the Koragratten (I don’t like caves) and whadda know, more waterfalls!

And then, we reached our goal. Lappland!

Everything went through here, snow mobile trails, hiking trails, rivers, sheep and reindeer. Norway just a few steps away, really pretty plateau. Good thing it was cloudy otherwise the majestic of it all would have blown our brains 🙂
The wilderness road continues with, big surprise, more waterfalls and then some other not so big surprises like Kanelbullar and UFOs. Stay tuned!
