First day back in Croatia, confused with the Autobahn, highways and mountain roads. Poor Freya couldn’t find a stop so we had to push really hard to the coast of Makarska. Nice town, but everything back to closed and it got really cold. This will become a driving force.

Winter was coming back and with a vengeance, and we were out of gas! Got very lucky that a companies main propane center wasn’t too far out of the way so went there after lunch and got a propane fill without having to change bottles. Great. we have heat again.

Then a very lovely night somewhere near Omis with restaurant, free schnapps, dude on guitar and a friendly German motorcyclist Steffan. Had some croissants for breakfast and on or way.
Next stop was a town called Marina, it was one, and of the 20 restaurants one was open, had a great lunch. We decided to try a campground by Šibenik. Found out, an entire peninsula belonged to a company with a dozen hotels and a campground. In the past we would avoid this sort of thing like the plague but for off season, we have it a shot, worked great! Freya could use the hotel multiple indoor playgrounds while I used the bar.

Place was empty. So we stayed for 4 days to chill out, quite nice. Very comforting, but it was getting colder.

Not sure what to do next, confused, knowing it’s getting colder, and the luxury resorts in Istria are not yet open, we go to Krk, both island and city, to another luxury valamar camping site. for the next 4 days hoping for more of the same luxury.

Could’ve been fantastic, but with the daily rain and really cold temperatures, we were kinda stuck in the van.

So we had another few days, but it was getting freezing at night and forecast was just crap for the final days of our trip. After confused and cold discussions, we reach the conclusion to head early home.
Very long ending here, with only driving with Freya sleeping, I still wanted to avoid Austria and well, everything because it was cold at nights. We ended up driving the night shift and made it home, all good.

The entire idea to avoid the cold was moot, as we got home to discover we were out of heating oil, and our house was an ice cube. Damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.

Great parental leave trip. New countries offered plenty of new opportunities and desires for the future! Can’t wait for the next trip.
