In between Carretera Austral and Route 40

We left the Carretera Austral en route to Chile Chico, and this gravel road was by far the worse one yet. Had some amazing views though and insanely curvy streets next to drops that went a good 50m straight down with no guard rail. Fun times.

Somewhere over the rainbow, is our next stop.
The street had no railings, but this picnic site did!

Got in Chile Chico, got info, got supplies, got cash, got out of there. The Patagonian National Park was some 50km away, and this road was even worse. Sometimes my speed was 10kmh. I seriously stopped once or twice contemplating to continue, the van (“Hubi” is the name of the van, sort for Hubertus, not Hubraum) was fine, but it was bumping my stress limits. Eventually made it to the park, the Ranger Cesar was cool and friendly, we got a spot and went for a nice vertical hike to see the lake Jeinimeni.

Ventured off the marked path to get even higher, easy and nice.
Insanely blue water, once again, no filter

The next day did a hike around the 3 lakes including Esmeralda and Verde. They weren’t as pretty. The best part is we had to cross a river of glacier water. 2 options, chest deep with a lot of current but short, or knee deep with low current but long. We did the later. I thought my legs would go numb quick to ignore the pain. My thoughts were wrong. My legs had a lovely red color after. No pics, sorry. In the end, the hike was kinda ok but we were fighting flies the entire time, not cool. Although crossing the river again on the way back was, ha ha…

Lago Verde with some mean mountain and glacier in the background, pic ain’t the best.

Next day we went to route 40
